Esther Yang
Counsel
Esther is a seasoned legal professional with nearly two decades of experience spanning both private practice and in-house counsel roles. She began her career as a litigator at a well-regarded litigation firm in Singapore, where she developed a strong foundation in dispute resolution and legal strategy. In 2010, she joined Creative Technology Ltd, a Singapore-listed global technology company, where she served as in-house counsel for over 15 years. At Creative, she oversaw all legal affairs for the company and its subsidiaries, with a particular focus on dispute resolution and intellectual property management. She handled all dispute resolution matters for the group, managing a wide spectrum of legal issues across jurisdictions. These included complex contractual and tortious claims, IP infringement, and licensing litigation. Her experience spanned both high-stakes legal battles and smaller-scale disputes that arose more frequently across different areas of the business. Through this, she came to appreciate that each dispute is unique, and resolution is never a one-size-fits-all approach. In a rapidly evolving legal and technological landscape, Esther continues to refine her approach to dispute resolution, seeking not only time and cost efficiencies but also outcomes that add strategic value. Esther also played a pivotal role in managing and defending Creative’s intellectual property portfolio. Her work involved protecting and commercialising the company’s innovations globally, with significant experience in navigating the complex and multifaceted patent enforcement landscape in the United States. She supported Creative’s strategic initiatives by aligning IP protection with business goals, helping the company maintain its competitive edge in the fast-paced tech industry. In the course of her in-house career, Creative was on IAM’s annual Asia IP Elite List in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2020 in recognition of the high value IP transactions which were concluded in the Asia-Pacific region. The Asia IP Elite list also identified Creative as a company with world-class IP functions and strategies, an accolade which embodies the very principle that Esther champions: strong, strategic IP management is not just a legal function, but a core driver of innovation, competitiveness, and long-term value. As such, at TLC, she hopes to help companies build robust IP portfolios with a view to realising the full value of their innovations. She believes that as technology continues to advance, the protection and strategic use of intellectual property will become increasingly vital. With the right expertise and approach, companies can transform their intellectual property into powerful business assets. Throughout her career, Esther has demonstrated a commitment to excellence, adaptability, and forward-thinking legal strategy. Her approach combines legal expertise with a deep understanding of business dynamics, making her a trusted advisor to technical, commercial, and executive teams. Her broad experience across litigation, corporate advisory, and IP management positions her uniquely to support companies navigating the legal challenges of innovation and global expansion. She continues to advocate for the importance of intellectual property as a driver of value and a cornerstone of sustainable business success.
